CHARACTER NAME: Leo
CHARACTER AGE: approx. 18 years old
SERIES: Fire Emblem: Fates
CHRONOLOGY: Post-Ending: Birthright
CLASS: Anti-hero???
HOUSING: I'm hoping for Maurtia Falls Individual housing, if possible~
BACKGROUND: -Here is a wiki link!
Leo is the second youngest of the four remaining children of Garon, the king of the kingdom of Nohr. He was born to a concubine, as were the other siblings aide from the eldest, Xander, who was born to the queen, but in Nohr any child of the king has an equal chance at the throne, and as a child Leo not only saw his older siblings fight each other and die for the throne, but was also acutely aware of the fact that his mother only cared for him as a pawn.
As he grew, became close to his four remaining siblings, as well as the main character, Corrin, who had been kidnapped from the rival country and kept in a tower, raised and treated as though they were another child of Garon's, albeit pine who needed protection. While Leo grew up resenting Corrin somewhat, jealous of the care and attention they received, it was hard to deny that they we're good and that he also grew to love and care for them. After all, Corrin was still his sibling and Leo had grown to be very desperate for connection and afraid of losing those he cared for, because of how few and far between they were.
On Garon's order, he and his siblings brought Corrin to see the king, who wanted to test their loyalty and strength by having them execute prisoners, which they could not bring themselves to do. Leo stepped in to help by using his powers to make it appear as if he killed the prisoners, only to have them released.
Corrin is then sent out on a mission and ends up in Hoshido, where they met their mother, Queen Mikoto. This eventually leads to Mikoto being assassinated, and a battle between Corrin's Hoshidan and Nohrian siblings. In the timeline that this Leo is from, Corrin sides with Hoshido, their 'birth' family, which results in a war, and Leo and his siblings to see Corrin as a traitor who abandoned them.
During the course of this war, Leo is defeated, and admits he was unable to kill Corrin due to still loving them, and upon his defeat he decides to investigate the claim that his father had gone mad on his own. He comes to the conclusion that Corrin was right but cannot fight his own family, leaving Corrin and their Hoshidan allies to finish the war, killing his father. Xander and Leo's younger sister, Elise, are killed when Xander attempts to duel Corrin, but the war is ended. Not wanting the throne herself, Leo's older sister Camilla gives it to him, and he swallows his pride to forge peace with Hoshido after the war, attending the coronation as an ally of their new king before his own, which is where I'm taking him from.
PERSONALITY: Leo is royalty, and thus a well-known public figure. Like any other public figure, he tends to behave differently in different situations. The public face that he wears is strict and imposing, appearing before crowds and in events as a stoic and stern young man, humorless and poised. Leo wants to be seen as an equal to his other family members, but mostly his eldest brother, Xander, and so he pushes himself to appear as much more mature and put-together than an 18 year old really should be. This is only exasperated when Xander dies, and Leo ends up with the crown. He is not a popular king, not very warm or friendly, but he does what he thinks is the best for his country, keeping in mind how the kingdom loved Xander and hoping that doing what he believed Xander would do would bring happiness and comfort for his people.
Leo puts on a prickly front around people he does not know well because of a fear of abandonment. Part of it of course stems from the fact that Xander was always highly praised and well-loved, but it also comes from the non-relationship that he had with his mother. In Nohr, any child of the king's could become the next in line, and Leo was the son of King Garon, and a concubine(unnamed in canon), the woman using Leo as a pawn to gain power and influence in society and never really regarding him as a child who needed to be reared and cared for. This fear was further instilled in him as a number of his half-siblings all quickly and easily turned on each other for a shot at the throne. Leo lost a lot of the people he considered family in his youth, and those he had left were few and far between. In the end, only three of his blood-related siblings survived(Elise simply being too young to have been around for the bloodbath). He grew up bitter and disconnected, afraid to get close to people for fear that they too would find nothing to care about in him, or otherwise would threaten his life for a chance at the throne. He grew up not really feeling like anyone else existed in the world beside him, though he did develop a bond with his siblings. This bond was also tempered by the fact that he was pushing himself to seem more mature, more capable, just more in general, which made him competitive and distant. As a result, his older sister Camilla, usually very doting, backed off to give him his space(as one would often do for a teen acting out), and Leo and Xander's training in battle took on different routes- Leo choosing to focus on magic while Xander was trained in swordplay.
Despite all of this, Leo is not unkind. While he doesn't necessarily get along with people and he can be VERY blunt in the way that he speaks, Leo genuinely does care for his family and for the lives and well-being of the Nohrian people, and he finds it easy to connect with those less fortunate, such as one of his very best friends and retainers, Niles. He had been a thief, breaking into the palace, who had been left behind by the others he'd been with as a distraction. They knew they'd be leaving Niles to his death, but he didn't mean anything to them, and when Leo came in to execute him, Niles begged not for his life, but for the release of death. Sensing a kindred spirit in the man, he was employed on the spot, and Leo and Niles have become inseperable since then. His other retainer and close friend, Odin, had been employed by Leo's father. At first, they hadn't gotten along, Odin's enthusiasm and friendliness being quite off-putting to the sourpuss Prince, and he had attempted to get rid of him by sending him on various suicide missions and even a few quests for items he'd made up, such as a 'lodestone infused with darkness'. Every time, Odin would carry out these missions enthusiastically and moreover, successfully, and Leo grew very endeared by his earnest personality and determination. At this point, his retainers are the people he'd consider the most important people in the world to him, emotionally.
Leo is not, however, some secret softie. Well, perhaps he is, in some ways, but he can be QUITE ruthless. He is known as one of the most dangerous of the Nohrian royalty, because he has a temper, and should he find someone truly deplorable, he has no qualms about killing them. In fact, Corrin does have to talk him out of killing one of his father's underlings after he is shown to be 'shameful' when begging for his life after an ambush gone wrong. The man in question was used to underhanded and disgraceful tactics, and Leo otherwise hadn't liked him for giving a bad name to the people of Nohr. It is already known as 'The Black Kingdom', and really they had enough of a terrible reputation. Leo would not abide someone who furthered such notions that Nohrians were cheap and dirty in fights, and cowards when things went south. He also remorselessly kills Iago, a tactician who had tricked others and then tried to blame King Garon for 'putting a spell on him', which Leo does not buy, crushing him with his plant magic.
In lieu of that, he tends to be a good judge of character, and he doesn't turn deadly to those he finds to be noble and good(for the most part). He does tend to have a bias against Hoshidans, but considering they were at war it is hard not to! But when Corrin defected to Hoshido, he tried his best to defeat Corrin and to make Corrin feel as though thier life was in danger, but when he was defeated he was easily called out after saying that 'he could still cast a spell and kill him' with a 'why haven't you?' He still felt love for Corrin, despite him fighting against them in the war, and wouldn't use lethal force against his family.
When not feeling very inferior to his siblings or fighting a war, Leo is known for a tendency to be a little.... drowsy. It probably has to do with the fact that he stays up very late studying, because he IS a very diligent student, both because he is curious, but also in order to keep up with Xander, he has to focus on his knowledge! So Leo stays up late and has a hard time waking up in the morning, and it is not uncommon for him to mess up when he dresses himself, his collar being inside out for half a day while he hadn't noticed being a running joke, though he's been spotted with his nightcap still on or nearly bringing his pillow into battle rather than his sacred tome which serves as his weapon.
Overall, Leo is a teen who is trying his very best to be taken seriously as an adult, as many teens do. He just tends to do a good job of it because he is kind of a magical prodigy and is allowed to kill people because Royalty.
That being said, he does still possess some strong, typically 'teenage' traits, including a lust for attention and the urge to act out just to see what will happen. These are urges he denies and suppresses, especially at his current canon point, because of his wish to be a proper king for Nohr.
Leo also has some less than favorable habits, such as the tendency to oversleep and to not wake up very easily, having been caught numerous times with his collar inside out, with a nightcap on his head, and once even nearly bringing a pillow into battle because of getting ready while still nearly asleep.
POWER:
Brynhildr: Leo's Sacred Tome, a legendary weapon from his homeland which gives him 'power over gravity, earth, and life'.
-Gravity: Manipulation of gravity to push/pull, float/crush things
-Earth: Manipulation of earth/rock. Mainly in the form of earthquakes, but can be utilitarian.
-Life: Manipulation/creation of plants(no animals/people affected), able to rapidly create trees and the like, usually for attack, but also may be utilitarian(ex. growing plants with fruits on it for eating)
*Having the book on his person is necessary for these powers, range is about the size of a soccer field. Channeling and any spell effects can be cancelled by taking the book away... or if he forgets it at home.
Dark Magic: Leo is a skilled dark mage, and while he can't cast powerful, specific spells without his tome, he is capable of wielding some dark magic that is less powerful or specifically directed, much like a classic witch would be able to. Things like curses or some plain magic damage is still possible without a tome.
Leo, having plenty of dark magic in his body from years of training, can discharge it either as a bolt from his hand or a sphere originating and expanding from his body. This is a basic manipulation of Darkness, and can only be destructive.
*Limited by intent- Leo can't harm someone/something he doesn't truly wish to harm, nor help someone he doesn't truly wish to help, but he can cast this without his book.
Phantom Steed: This is a non-canon power, but in canon he is a Dark Knight, a class in which a powerful Dark Mage takes to the back of a horse for added mobility.
-Summons a quasi-real horse-like creature that looks however the caster wants it to, but otherwise functions like a regular horse. Dissipates when dismissed or after an hour.
